Online UPS

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are electronic devices that ensure critical loads operate unaffected by grid anomalies. Among these devices, the topology that offers the most advanced protection is Online UPS (Double Conversion) systems.

What is an Online UPS?

An Online UPS is a power topology that continuously converts grid power from AC to DC and then back from DC to AC. This is why it is called "double conversion" or "dual conversion." The battery engages without any interruption because the load is always powered by the inverter.

Advantages of Double Conversion Technology

  • Zero Transfer Time: During a grid outage, the load continues to be powered by the inverter with no switching time.
  • Full Wave Filtering: All noise, harmonics and fluctuations at the input are filtered, providing a clean and stable sine wave at the output.
  • Frequency and Voltage Regulation: Output values remain stable even with generators or unbalanced grids.
  • Critical Load Protection: Ideal for sensitive equipment such as data centers, hospitals and industrial facilities.

Difference Between Online UPS and Line-Interactive UPS

A Line-Interactive UPS powers the load directly from the grid when it is available and only performs voltage regulation. When the grid fails, the inverter engages (2-4 ms transfer time). An Online UPS, on the other hand, always powers the load from the inverter, completely eliminating this transfer time. This difference can be vital for sensitive electronic devices.

When Should You Choose an Online UPS?

  • Data centers and server rooms – Zero downtime requirement
  • Medical imaging devices – Sensitive systems like MRI, CT
  • Industrial PLC and SCADA systems – To prevent production line stoppages
  • Telecommunications infrastructure – For uninterrupted communication
  • Security and fire systems – Critical safety infrastructure

What to Consider When Choosing an Online UPS

For the right Online UPS selection, first calculate your load's power consumption (in VA or Watts), then determine the battery capacity based on the required runtime (minutes). Also evaluate the device's input voltage range, efficiency rating and communication protocols (SNMP, RS-485). As LE-TECH, we offer the most suitable solution for your needs with Tunçmatik PowerUp ECO and PRO series.
